What happened to AvatarAI?
AvatarAI (avatarai.me) was Pieter Levels' solo-built AI avatar generator, launched in late 2022 (roster files ~2022-11 as an estimate; the cited Indie Hackers case study dates launch to Oct 2022) and reportedly booking $150K in its first week [3P]. It did not fail; it was absorbed. Levels launched PhotoAI on 2023-02-10 as "an evolution of my previous project AvatarAI.me" [FDR], and archive records show the avatarai.me domain switched from a live standalone site (last 200 on 2023-05-07) to a permanent redirect into photoai.com (first 301 on 2023-05-21) [3P] — a redirect re-confirmed by a live desk fetch on 2026-07-16 [OBS]. The roster had carried the death year as ~2025 on directory evidence; the archive record moves the standalone end to May 2023.

Cause of death — our read
The roster files the cause as: no moat built — absorbed by the founder's own PhotoAI. The record supports consolidation, not collapse. AvatarAI reportedly booked $150K in its first week [3P], then Lensa's better-funded mobile app took the avatar mass market — a reported $30M+ in a month [3P]; the late-2022 timing is our inference from the source's launch sequencing [INF]. On 2023-02-10 Levels launched PhotoAI, calling it "an evolution of my previous project AvatarAI.me which still runs/sells really well" [FDR]. For roughly three more months the old site ran standalone — archived promo pricing (?promo=valentine on 2023-02-01, ?promo=easter on 2023-03-11) shows active selling [3P]. Between 2023-05-07 (last archived 200) and 2023-05-21 (first archived 301 to photoai.com) the domain was folded in [3P]; the redirect target settled at photoai.com/ai-avatars?ref=avatarai by 2023-06-05 and held into early 2025; the ?ref parameter was dropped between archived captures of 2025-01-11 and 2025-04-02, and the domain answers 301 to photoai.com/ai-avatars today [OBS]. Nothing died in the P&L sense: PhotoAI grew from about $5.4K MRR in week one to a reported $132-138K MRR by late 2025 [3P], and the Avatar AI trademark still headlines a live landing page inside it. [INF] Our read: two products, one founder, one overlapping customer — the older, narrower product was cannibalized on purpose once the newer, more defensible one proved out. [INF] The ?ref=avatarai parameter suggests the founder metered how much traffic the retired brand kept sending. Filing correction carried forward: the roster held death at ~2025 on a single directory listing that itself lagged (dang.ai inactive flag 2024-07-25); archive status-code history moves the standalone end to May 2023.

Carried forward from the roster's own note: same-founder overlapping sites merge eventually. Three transferable items. One: when a mobile app (Lensa) takes a category's mass market, the counter-move on file here is upmarket repositioning — photorealism over cartoon avatars — under a new brand, with the old domain folded in once the new line proves out. Two: a 301 is the cheapest sunset on the books; it carries backlinks, type-in traffic, and trademark equity forward at near-zero maintenance cost, and a ?ref= parameter metered what the old brand still sent (the parameter itself was dropped by early 2025, on the books via archived captures). Three, for this instrument: directory listings lag reality by years (inactive flag 2024-07, actual redirect 2023-05). Before a death date is filed, the archive's status-code history should be pulled; a redirect onset is a harder timestamp than any listing.
